No strangers to the allure of Stephin Merritt’s songbook, Superchunk’s take on “I Don’t Want to Get Over You” recasts The Magnetic Fields’ depressive epic as a manic, guitar-forward ripper, making Merritt’s lyrics writhe in an entirely new kind of agony. Featuring regularly on their 2025 setlists, the track’s magic is similar to what Superchunk accomplished on 2025’s Songs in the Key of Yikes songs like “No Hope” and “Everybody Dies,” making a triumphant, danceable anthem despite the looming abyss.
Mac McCaughan, on “I Don’t Want to Get Over You”:
“Stephin Merritt’s songs have been inspiring me since The Magnetic Fields’ “100,000 Fireflies” single came into the record store where i worked in 1991. Superchunk covered that song back then and this year we recorded another Magnetic Fields classic, “I Don’t Want To Get Over You” from their epic 69 Love Songs album. Stephin’s songs remind me of The Ramones in their classic pop simplicity & we play this one that way. We came home with a handful of the tour 7-inch (featuring amazing sleeve art by Glen Baldridge) and the B-side is by another one of our favorite artists, NZ’s Look Blue Go Purple.”
“I Don’t Want to Get Over You” brings an end to a busy 2025 for Superchunk, whose Songs in the Key of Yikes was released on August 21, 2025. The album is a showcase of the band’s calling cards: visceral, timeless and catchy as hell.
