Founded by bohemian California native Sarah Negahdari and Washington, DC, PhD student Charlie Mahoney, the art-damaged, punky Los Angeles based Happy Hollows is a playful and electrifying act with magnetic stage presence and razor-sharp chops. The band has spent the last few years cutting their teeth in LA’s underground and touring the country with indie favorites like Lucius, Deerhoof and Japandroids.
The band’s forthcoming record, Concordia, due out September 8 follows their critically acclaimed debut, Spells and showcases the groups evolved sonic aesthetic, which features analog synth melodies, polyrhythmic drumming, and angular guitars. For the effort, the duo enlisted the help of Los Angeles producer Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast) and London producer and mixing engineer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Depeche Mode, Interpol, Liars). The collection represents the peak of Happy Hollows’ artistic progression, combining the live dynamism and energy of their early releases with the creative sonic palette and layered synth arrangements of their recent work.
Today, Ghettoblaster has the pleasure of premiering a new track, “Decide.” Negahdri had this to say about it:
“‘Decide’ is a song about significant moments in life that don’t happen too often. When a friend dies or a long-term relationship ends. The type of moment where it really feels like there is a ‘before’ and an ‘after.’ The song is about accepting changes that happen at after those times. Sonically, ‘Decide’ was a big change for us because there are hardly any guitars on the track. Most of the track is just two synths, drums, and vocals. We liked the way the song sounded without too many other instruments — it really gave it some space to breathe — so we didn’t layer too much when we recorded it in the studio.”
