Athens, Georgia and NYC-based act Night Palace will release their debut album Diving Rings this Friday, April 1 via Park The Van. Today, they share “Stranger Powers,” a lush, dreamy meditation on moments of understanding one’s own power. Instrumentally, Night Palace exhales a shimmering arrangement of lush guitars and a dynamic blend of psychedelic/new wave influence. Frontwoman Avery Draut warm, europhic vocals are utterly captivating from start to finish with Diving Rings.
“These songs are cherished items on an altar to all the loves in my life, and this one is a friend’s glitter nail polish on that altar. I wrote it in a humid summer in Athens, Georgia, when my friends and I were finding ourselves feeling in between things, in a scary and new way. I hope the song (‘Stranger Powers’) feels like looking for answers in nighttime walks, when the flowers are at their most perfumed; and opening up to mystery and curiosity, holding our friends’ hands while we do,” says Draut.
In eleven simultaneously theatrical and viscerally intimate interludes and songs, Diving Rings illuminates a tableau of past, present and future moments with the loves of Draut’s life. Her meditation on memory, the unknown, and faith in the connective tissue among the generations and experiences that herald us into being offer a balm for what we do not recall, and for those we have lost. Diving Rings is a dizzying listening experience, because her content is both so relatable and so intensely specific to her poetic recollection.
