A few weeks ago, Pacific Northwest post-punk trio DATURA announced their new full-length, Arcano Chemical, which sees release on Sell The Heart Records on January 27, 2022. Alongside the announcement, they shared the video for the album’s first single, “Phantasma.” The single introduced a band whose goth-tinged influences offer a range of emotions and energies.
Recorded in their hometown of Wenatchee, Washington, and mastered by Seattle-based recording engineer and musician TAD Doyle, Arcano Chemical highlights the band’s stylistic variety, which is sure to draw comparisons to ’80s greats like The Cure, The Misfits, Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Chameleons.
After finding their show calendar eradicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the band locked down during the winter of 2020 to craft a pensive collection of songs that tells stories of ghosts, nightmares, isolation, love, and death.
Today, Ghettoblaster has the pleasure of sharing the band’s second single, “Trapped.” DATURA bassist Jake St. John had this to say about it:
“‘Trapped’ came together spontaneously. I showed up to practice one day with the bass line, started playing it, and Tiffany and David joined in. The first time we played the song is pretty much exactly as it appears on the record. That is very atypical for us as songs usually develop over the course of a few sessions.
“When we play it live, we’ve heard from fans it feels like a cross between Slint and Bauhaus which is about the highest compliment I could receive and definitely not something I’d think to attempt consciously.
“‘Trapped’ tells a nightmarish story—kind of like ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’—in which a traveler is on the ocean and is dragged under the waves by some kind of creature. I always imagine sirens but the lyrics are ambiguous enough to leave that up to the listener’s imagination.”
Pre-save the “Trapped” single, out tomorrow, here.
DATURA has teamed up with Andy Pohl, guitarist of Tsunami Bomb and owner of Sell the Heart Records, to share the album in cassette and CD format, and all major streaming platforms.
