Standing strong between the high-handed anthemic choruses of the Killers and the retro synth melodies of MGMT, Gentlemen Hall has established itself as one of the most talked about bands to emerge from Boston in recent years. The band is gearing up to release a new EP this fall, but in the meantime, they’ll be taking their live show on the road, performing several festivals around the Midwest and East Coast, interspersed with several headlining dates.
Gentlemen Hall recently released their single “Sail Into The Sun”, which has garnered radio airplay nationwide, along with huge synchs in Target and Samsung commercials. RAC also gave it the remix treatment, which is available as a free download on soundcloud.
Ghettoblaster caught up with Gentlemen Hall bassist Rory prior to the run of dates and the release of the new EP to talk about the band’s life on the road. This is what he said.
What kind of vehicle are you travelling in, and what are you doing to outfit it for maximum comfort?
We roll in a huge van / bison hybrid complete with FM radio, Tom-tom GPS that mostly works, flat tire and something that sounds like whoopie cushions radiating from the back.
What is the planned playlist for your travels?
Depends on who’s driving but we’ve been going through a lot of the newer alternative stuff, some classic funk stuff and a lot of today’s hip-hop. Artists pushing the envelope and getting us out of our comfort zone are good times.
Which of the cities that you’ll be visiting are you most excited about and why?
That’s a toughie… Gavin and I are Clevelanders who have spent a lot of time in Columbus so those are both going to be a blast. Cobi is from Minneapolis and we’re real psyched about that one – plus we’re gigging with his brother’s band, Step Rockets who are great live.
Do you keep a diary during your travels? If so, is it public? Can we share it?
Yeah kinda, it’s at twitter.com/gentlemenhall. Ha ha.
What is the craziest thing you’ve seen on the road during this or other tours?
A guy riding a unicycle with Chihuahuas on both shoulders, heading past a gang of tranny hookers taking pictures of him on their iphones in Austin, TX is a recent one that comes to mind. Unfortunately, this was before Vine was around.
