Athens, Georgia-bred, NYC-based act Night Palace are set to release their debut album Diving Rings on April 1st via Park The Van. Today, they unveiled the ethereal “Titania,” an ode to frontwoman Avery Draut’s grandmother. “This song is a bit of a painting,” she says. “It feels like a still life of a soft morning at my grandma’s house. I think I needed somewhere to put the reality that my time with her was growing shorter, and it became this ode to her.” It’s complemented by a stunning video, which carries the same dedication—“I woke up in the middle of the night with the idea for this music video. I remember waking up crying, because I knew that in the video I was building a bouquet for her.”
Written between NYC and Athens, Diving Rings sees Draut exploring past, present and future moments with the loves of her life. Throughout eleven intimate tracks, Draut meditates on memory, the unknown and faith, piecing together a listening experience that is both so relatable and so intensely specific to her poetic recollection. The oceanic themes explored throughout the record originate with Draut’s memory of her grandmother, who taught her to swim, to immerse herself in the community, and to reconcile fear with trust.
Recorded both in the studio and a recital hall, the album features shimmering guitar, graceful basslines, and a pendulum-like rhythm. Engineer-producer Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, of Montreal) weaves Draut’s orchestral swells with the core of her band seamlessly. When paired with additional engineering and production by Andy LeMaster (Better Oblivion Community Center, Michael Stipe), the result is a dynamic, atmospheric pop with hints of psychedelia and new wave.
