Adelaide producer and DJ Inkswel reveals “Mystical Magic,” a dirtied up slice of modern digi dub infused with the iconic ramblings of late legendary pioneer of Jamaican reggae music, Lee Scratch Perry, as well as Melbourne’s psychedelic wizard, Elf Tranzporter. The track is the third single from Inkswel’s new concept album, The Snagglepuss: Chasing Infinity, out May 13 via Cosmocities Records.
Inkswel’s genre-bending production skills move into digi dub territory, and fans of this sound will be satisfied with the results. Dirty drum machines lay the bed for the vocals of the late dub icon, and these takes would be the final recordings that the Bob Marley mentor would produce before his passing in August 2021. The track opens up for verses from Elf Tranzporter, accented with bleeping synth chords, verbed out trumpets and stabby retro keys. The result is a deep melting pot that draws you in and satisfies those digi dub cravings.
Adelaide born and raised Inkswel (Jules Habib) has spent much of the last two decades in the Northern Hemisphere DJing every party and club from Rhythm Section in London to Output in New York and released music on BBE, Atjazz and Sonar Kollektiv, among other labels. On the Snagglepuss material, he’s taken a more collaborative approach, and much of this record was co-created with Stephen on bass, Sloth on horns, and Inkswel’s partner, Erin Buku. Inskwel and the team’s genre-bending productions draw influence from P Funk, 80’s Pop, Boogie Funk, Classic 90’s Hip-Hop, and Contemporary Soul stitching it all together into a seamless, multi-colored package.
