Belgian-Caribbean provocateur Charlotte Adigéry and her long-term musical partner Bolis Pupul have unveiled a Soulwax remix of their track “Cliché.” A standout song from their critically acclaimed debut album Topical Dancer, the remix originally premiered in June during the 2manydjs live show at Primavera. DEEWEE label heads Soulwax turn in a gloriously euphoric flip of “Cliché,” ratcheting up the energy to their trademark tempo in a monstrous, synth-heavy four to the floor rework. The original track (full title: “Ceci n’est pas un cliché”), is an accumulation of all the cliché lyrics Charlotte and Bolis have heard over the years and a wink to one off the most copied sentences in art, originally by Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte.
The Ghent-based duo, who broke out with their 2019 Zandoli EP, are rare storytellers in electronic music: they take the temperature of the time and funnel them into their playful synth concoctions – never didactic and always with a knowing wink. These are not talking points that you’d ordinarily hear on the dancefloor but Charlotte and Bolis have ripped up the rulebook with their debut record. Featuring standout singles “Blenda,” “HAHA” and “Thank You,” Topical Dancer – which cemented Charlotte and Bolis as a duo under both their names for the first time and was co-written and co-produced by today’s remixers, Soulwax – is both a triumph of kaleidoscopic electro-pop and “a snapshot of how we think about pop culture in the 2020s.”
Topical Dancer is a deliciously mischievous dance record, and an outstanding debut LP from Belgium’s brightest musical talent. Charlotte & Bolis made their momentous debut performance on Later… with Jools Holland recently, and the album received widespread critical acclaim,
