Bands on Bands: Rory Given (Gentlemen Hall) on Miike Snow's Miike Snow

Miike Snow

Miike Snow

Island/Def Jam indie/pop band Gentlemen Hall, a pop sextet from Boston just wrapped up a headlining gig at Webster Hall for CMJ, and is set to hit the road next month for a string of dates with Third Eye Blind.  While the band are no strangers to wearing their influences on their sleeves (they just released a cover of Kendrick Lamar’s “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe,” below), Ghettoblaster recently caught up with GH bassist Rory Given recently to discuss one of his, and the band’s favorite albums with Ghettoblaster, Miike Snow’s self-titled release.  This is what he told us.
What is your favorite album?
As a band, when Miike Snow first released Miike Snow it was like a smack in the face – it was an album all six of us gravitated toward immediately.
Do you remember when you received or purchased the album?
Would have been mid-2009 around the time of its release.
What is your favorite song on the album?
Well, it’d come down to “Cult Logic”, “Animal” and “Silvia” if you put guns to our heads, but it’s a great record from top to bottom.
Have you ever covered a song from the album?
We have. “Animal” is a track we’ll pull out every now and then.  It’s a fun cover track that we’ll just throw in on the fly.  Someone in the band in-between songs might turn and say, “Animal!” and two seconds later we’ll change gears and play that instead of whatever is next in the set order.  It’s a great track to play live.
What is it about the album that makes it stand out against the band’s other output?
Well, they only have two records out.  The second one is also great, the first one just happened to drop shortly after we’d started taking ourselves a little seriously as a band and were writing deeper songs.
Have you ever given a copy of this record to anyone?  What were the circumstances?
We’re always pushing people to music like Miike Snow.  We create Spotify playlists all the time based on stuff we hear and stuff people show us.  It’s fun.  We’re always trading track recommendations with our fans.
Which of the records that you’ve performed on is your favorite?
It’s pretty fair to say that the record we’ll be releasing early 2014 is the most exciting one so far.  We’ve put a ton of time into it and the anticipation to get it out there is making it all that much more electric for us.
