Bands on Bands: Lost In Los Angeles on U2's The Joshua Tree

The Joshua Tree

The Joshua Tree

During their tenure together, Lost in Los Angeles have emerged as true sonic storytellers, wandering through hope, love and humanity, while wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Pulling from such varied musical inspirations such as Air, Depeche Mode, Led Zeppelin, Boards of Canada, Deftones, Moby, Flock of Seagulls, Stevie Wonder, Goldfrapp, Elton John, and Jeff Buckley, LiLA stretches musical boundaries on all fronts.
Offering listeners personal musings about life and relationships, LiLA gives a voice to those looking to find their way. The band recently finished their Summer 2013 28-city national JVC Mobile U.S. Tour with Girl on Fire and Angels Fall, in which they supported their EP The Hovering.
We talked to the band while they prepared for the re-release of the EP’s single, “Because Of You”, about a profound record they could all agree was their favorite.  This is what they said about U2’s The Joshua Tree.
What is your favorite album?
The Joshua Tree, U2
Do you remember when you received or purchased the album?
We are each trying to remember when and where we got it… Probably a CD from like, Tower Records haha…
What is your favorite song on the album?
This is such a tough one. Each song blends into the next, you know? So many great intros…
After toiling between “Where the Streets Have No Name, “In God’s Country”, and “One Tree Hill” we had to settle on “Where the Streets Have No Name”.
What is it about the song that resonates with you?
The pulsing, driving guitar scapes from intro to outro. The song flexes endlessly… like a butterfly. Lyrically profound.
Have you ever covered a song from the album?
No. But our wheels are turning!
What is it about the album that makes it stand out against the band’s other output?
You get the feeling it marked the beginning of an era. The album is so seamless – like they had this one creative idea in their heads and it never stopped from song to song.
Have you ever given a copy of this record to anyone?  What were the circumstances?
No… none of us have actually.
Which of the records that you’ve performed on is your favorite?
Probably The Hovering EP.
What is your favorite song on the EP and why?
Favorite song would be “Because of You”.  Feels like we really captured the energy we were looking for – the spark, the spirit, the love.
