Bands On Bands: Brandon Gallagher (Old Wounds) on Every Time I Die's Hot Damn

Old Wounds

Old Wounds

As purveyors of vitriolic, no-holds-barred post hardcore, New Jersey’s Old Wounds emerge as champions of the genre. Out September 16 on Good Fight Music, their latest EP,  was produced by Kevin Bernsten (Full of Hell, Mutilation Rites) and mastered by Brad Boatright (Integrity, Modern Life Is War).
Ghettoblaster recently caught up with Old Wounds drummer Brandon Gallagher to discuss a powerful album that has long influenced his pummeling approach to music making. This is what he told us about Every Time I Die’s Hot Damn.
What is your favorite album?
Hot Damn, by Every Time I Die.
Do you remember when you received or purchased the album?
On the last day of fifth grade I got into a freak skateboarding accident, ended up needing 40 stitches on my leg. End result was I was stuck in bed for two weeks until the cut healed.  A couple days after the accident my cousin’s boyfriend at the time brought over his CD booklet, and Hot Damn was one of over a hundred CDs that I listened to for two weeks straight.
What is your favorite song on the album?
Tough call. I’m going to go with either “Ebolarama” or “Godspeed Us To Sea.” “I’LL MEET YOU OVERBOARD.”
What is it about the song that resonates with you?
It’s not even just those specific songs, but the whole record. I was getting into heavier music at the same time I was really getting into playing music. This record pretty much molded how I play drums (thanks, Ratboy), as well as molded my musical tastes for years and years to come.
Have you ever covered a song from the album?
I used to jam this record from start to finish in my headphones and try and figure out every song on drums. As far as ACTUALLY covering this songs, that’s like wearing a bands shirt to a show that they’re playing. You can’t seem like the biggest fan boy ha ha.
What is it about the album that makes it stand out against the band’s other output?
It’s raw as hell, and Keith’s lyrics on this are some of the best in my opinion.
Have you ever given a copy of this record to anyone? What were the circumstances?
I can’t say that I have, but this is one of my go-to driving records. I’m pretty sure everyone who has ever been in the car/van with me has listened to this record all the way through at least 500 times.
Which of the records that you’ve performed on is your favorite?
From Where We Came Is Where We’ll Rest is obviously going to hold a lot of weight in that category, just because it’s our first LP. I actually just re-listened to it the other day, and appreciated it a lot more now than I did when we recorded it two years ago. I will say I think I was a little bit more “creative” on the Trenchfoot split.
What is your favorite song on the album and why?
“An Ode To Love” is my favorite song to play live, but that’s off the Trenchfoot split. Off of FWWCIWWR, I’d say the title track and “Shallow Water” are my favorites for sure.
