All People share their new single “Fearful / Sick,” the latest song from the band’s upcoming self-titled album. Due out on May 20 via Community Records, the New Orleans quartet premiered the single with Culture Collide, offering another glimpse into the sprawling post-punk tendencies of their new record. Speaking about “Fearful / Sick,” Culture Collide shared, “A distinctive minor keyboard lick breezes through a chaotic post-punk rhythm, as Greg Rodrigue’s monotone garage vox gives the song a no-wave feel.”
“Fearful / Sick” is a personal song that deals with mental illness and overcoming obstacles and limitations. The song’s driving waves of synth and bouncing rhythms keep the mood dreamy yet driving as the vocals shift between depressed and optimistic. Speaking about the song’s lyrics, Rodrigue shared:
“I wrote the lyrics for this one while feeling fairly depressed on tour. The song is me describing my clinical anxiety, which has at times lead to severe delusion and panic attacks. On a few occasions I’ve been sent to the psychiatric ward of hospitals for my mental condition. It’s exhausting to feel that any day at any given time, I can lose control of my “mental grip” and be lead into a dark realm of severe alienation from not only other people, but also the person that I would describe as “myself”. There are two choruses in the song. The first chorus states “I want none of this” as a feeling of exhaustion and a plea for help from living in the shadow of depression and anxiety, the second time the chorus comes around, I flip the lyrics and sing “I want all of this”. It is meant to be a more uplifting tone, plus an acknowledgement of my fellow human beings. It is acceptance that I am not alone in this feeling, and that through friendship, family, and community we / I can overcome and live with mental illness.”
