Split Stream | Chris Broach, “Shoulder Your Own,” and Palm Ghosts, “Fellow Immortalists”

Chicago, Illinois-based songwriter Chris Broach, also of highly influential emo-rock at Braid, has teamed with Nashville’s Palm Ghosts to bring a digital split release to fans.

In partnership with Steadfast Records (Brandston, Zao, Appleseed Cast), and Poptek Records, Sweet Cheetah Records presents Chris Broach’s “Shoulder Your Own” with Palm Ghosts’ “Fellow Immortalists,” which will hit digital streaming platforms on August 9. Both tracks are mastered by Dan Coutant at Sun Room Mastering, with split art coming from Nick Hamby of The Raging Nathans and Houseghost.

Catch Chris Broach as he performs with Braid at Best Friends Forever Festival (alongside Jawbox, The Anniversary, The Jesus Lizard, etc.) in October, and catch Palm Ghosts on tour now as the roll out four EPs this year in anticipation of their Facades double LP at the end of the year.

Broach announced a series of singles and splits with a variety of bands and labels this year. With a focus on guitar driven, dynamic, poly-rhythmic, and odd-timed songs that “just feel right” these are the first releases ever under Broach’s own name. The first of those singles saw release via New Granada Records/Sweet Cheetah Records in March, and a split 7″ with Dayton’s The 1984 Draft hit the streets via Poptek Records/Sweet Cheetah Records in May.

In recent years, Broach has released music with more electro-tinged bands like SNST and The Firebird Band, but with these singles, we see his sights moving back to guitar. In truth, these songs highlight what made Chris Broach’s contributions to Braid so complementary and crucial –simply, they’re catchy, groovy, and incredibly strong. Best of all, he’s promised to continue down this path for the foreseeable future, as he focuses on doing one song at a time at his own studio he calls Mass Energy (located outside of Chicago, Illinois).

In his words, “it’s a different approach to how I’ve done it in the past where I’ll write a whole album and figure out the details in the studio and at home in bits and pieces at a time. Instead, I’m focusing on writing from the guitar – working on each song until it’s finished, delivering it, completely finished, to a label, and then starting the next one.”

On May 10, Nashville post-punk trio Palm Ghosts released their Escape EP via Sweet Cheetah Records and Poptek Records.  According to the band, it was the first of four digital EPs they’ll release in 2024, with each rolling up into a double LP called Facades at the end of the year.

Masks, the second EP from the series saw release on July 19.

The eventual Facades double LP, will feature 20 songs that mix genres and moods like no other release in Palm Ghost’s large catalog. The songs will explore topics like religion, cults, love, loss and survival in the modern age. Some with beautiful melodies, some dark and brooding, but 100 percent Palm Ghosts.
