Album Premiere | Abandoncy, ‘Assailable//Agonism’

Kansas City, Missouri’s Abandoncy will release its new album, Assailable//Agonism (Learning Curve/The Ghost Is Clear/Vina Records), on September 20. You can purchase it here.

Though they have only been a band for just over five years, Abandoncy have grown into their status as a staple in the heavy music scene of Kansas City and surrounding areas. Composed of Damian Fisher on guitar and vocals, Lincoln Peterson on bass and vocals, and Morgan Reed Greenwood on drums, Abandoncy doesn’t need strength in numbers, and instead makes the most of what they’re given to create an end result much larger than the sum of its parts.

The influence of ’80s and ’90s noise rock is certainly felt here, in addition to ’90s and ’00s post hardcore, as well as multiple waves of emo and screamo. Abandoncy’s affinity for abstract structure, strange time, and dramatic pause gives them a style all their own. At its end it is breathtaking, addictive, and harrowing to experience.

Known for their passionate live performances, frenetic and synergized, Abandoncy recorded Assailable//Agonism following their summer 2023 tour in which they played the whole album front to back every night. They took to local Kansas City DIY venue Howdy (at which bassist Petterson and drummer Greenwood both provide their time) to record the album themselves over several sessions July-August 2023.

The album was self-produced by Abandoncy and recorded and mixed by Greenwood. It was mastered by Jack Shirley of The Atomic Garden. It alsoeatures a vocal contribution from Eugene S. Robinson (formerly frontman of Oxbow – his first recorded effort since the band’s demise).
