Last month Bar None Records announced a new album from LA’s Justus Proffit. A veteran of the cities DIY scene, his sophomore album Speedstar comes on the heels of a collaborative EP with Jay Som, and his fantastic debut LA’s Got Me Down. Today, Proffit shares “Big Mistake”, an instant classic from JP that invokes Elliott Smith and jangle-pop greats like the Cleaners from Venus (who he covers on the record). In his own words, the song is “about nostalgic feelings from past parties, lost memories. People that have come and gone in my life. The lessons learned.” It’s a deeply reflective song for the newly sober musician, thinking of time lost and the people he spent it with. The song opens with a ripping buildup before opening into the driving verse. As it blossoms into the chorus, Proffit backs himself up with a blend of gorgeous harmonies.
