The storied musical history behind The Brand New Heavies has been a lengthy one, remarkably together for almost 35 years with an album released just this past September. In short, the group set the world ablaze with its catchy dance grooves and lyrical melodicism.
It’s no surprise to find Brand New Heavies founder Jan Kincaid step out on his own along with vocalist Dawn Joseph for another go as MF Robots, although here there’s a different approach taken. The duo came together in 2013, instantly clicked and began writing new songs within a week of their first meeting. Adapting themselves under the MF Robots moniker, it was a subtle reference to the generic musical landscape.
In anticipation of its 2020 full-length debut (BBE), today MF Robots premiere its cover of the 70s soul classic “Finders Keepers,” originally by the Canadian/Michigan act Chairmen of the Board. While the original dove deep into a soulful funk, MF Robots takes a slightly different approach with Dawn Joseph handling the lead, sounding remarkably like a young Aretha Franklin.
