Over the last few years, Girl Talk, aka Pittsburgh-based producer/performer Gregg Gillis, has quietly been focusing on collaborative work, including a new single, “Trouble in Paradise.” Featuring Flatbush Zombie’s Erick The Architect, “Trouble in Paradise” samples Julian Casablancas and The Voidz and premiered as the end credits of HBO’s Silicon Valley.
Gillis comments, “I’m a fan of Flatbush Zombies, so I met up with Erick last time I was in New York. I played him some music that I was working on, and he later jumped on one of the beats. I loved what he did, but I started playing with the acapella over some different ideas. That’s something I always like to do, based on years of doing remixes. The Julian Casablancas and The Voidz sample really clicked with the initial idea, so we reworked the song, and it transformed into something more menacing and heavy.”
Erick the Architect joins a growing list of hip hop artists Girl Talk has produced since the release of the Girl Talk & Freeway “Broken Ankles” EP in 2014. Recent collaborations include Smoke DZA’s “The Hook Up feat. Dom Kennedy & Cozz” off his new album, Not For Sale (out this past Friday), Wiz Khalifa’s “Steam Room ft. Chevy Woods,” and Don Q’s “LIL B*TCH.” Still to come are releases with Big K.R.I.T., Juicy J, Young Nudy, and T-Pain, all of whom Girl Talk has recently been spending time with in the studio.
Girl Talk has been active playing concerts and festivals throughout North America. On the horizon are performances at SunFest in West Palm Beach and Australia’s Splendour in the Grass. For those venturing to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, keep an eye out for the display dedicated to Girl Talk, which is now a permanent part of the collection.
