Living in the same city (their adopted home of Durham, NC) for the first time since 2012 has given Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack the opportunity to chart a new path. Suddenly free to re-examine and rework the pre-existing confines of their long-standing musical partnership, Wasner and Stack returned to the studio in the summer of 2019. The result is the most generous and daring material of the duo’s career.
The first look into this new music is the searing single “Fortune,” about which Wasner says: “Life is change. Change is loss. This song is about how hard it is to let go, and the feeling of celebrating and mourning it all at once.”
In addition to releasing new material, the group is mounting its most ambitious tour yet. Called JOIN, the tour will feature a newly expanded live band performing not only Wye Oak’s music but songs from Stack and Wasner’s respective solo projects, Joyero and Flock of Dimes, and beyond. These performances will include new music, re-imaginings of songs from deep in their catalog, and hidden gems spanning their parallel creative work. A full list of JOIN performances can be found below; tickets go on sale Friday, November 15, at 10 am local time.
The past few years have been an especially fruitful period for the duo outside of Wye Oak: releasing albums from their solo projects, touring as members of Bon Iver, Sylvan Esso, and Lambchop, as well as collaborating as producers, composers, and multi-instrumentalists with everyone from Brooklyn Youth Chorus and Metropolis Ensemble to Deerhoof, Helado Negro, and Madeline Kenney.
