The One About Patriots Like Us

On this episode: Brian yells at the listeners from his front porch about how he is becoming an old man, Brian and Luke have a disagreement on whether there should be a remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Running Man (there shouldn’t), Luke fires shots at CSI’s David Caruso, Brian has never heard of the great literary work Walden, Luke uses Brian’s trick of giving songs familial relations to other songs, they talk about Wilson from Home Improvement being a creep, the motion picture The Piano sends Luke on the subject of actors playing both parents and lovers to other actors in different films and Brian and Luke start a new segment called Patriots Like Us all while playing the eight best songs you’ll hear all week!

Every week Ghettoblaster feature writers (and dear cousins!) Brian LaBenne and Luke LaBenne bring you fresh new songs with the hopes of introducing you to some that you may consider to be the best song ever.  Both Brian and Luke have no idea what songs the other has picked, so what you are hearing is their genuine reaction to listening to the songs together.  Also, if you enjoy this episode, head to ITunes to subscribe and rate our podcast with the highest rating available to you.

Today Doug Tuttle delivers the title track off of his sophomore solo record, It Calls On Me.. It Calls On Me proves the New Hampshire-native and ex member of MMOSS relaxing into his role as a memorable, and compelling songwriter, eager to showcase his storehouse of harmonies, dissonances, and delighting in the more fragile and intimate aspects of frayed-at-the-edges song-creation.

The album feels more like a blissful letting go, rather than a giving in.  Eschewing the jittery, love-lorn anxiety of his debut solo break through, the follow up presents a decidedly more dreamy journey through softer, sun-burnt landscapes, still showcasing Tuttle’s trademark masterful guitar-work and his very own brand of impeccably-crafted, fractured psychedelic pop.

It Calls On Me is set for release February 19 on Trouble In Mind Records who last year gave us eminent releases from Ultimate Painting, Dick Diver, Salad Boys and more. Tuttle hits the road next month – highlights include Brooklyn’s Rough Trade, Chicago, Nashville and dates with Paperhead.  Check out a full list of dates below.

The Paperhead’s brand new album, Africa Avenue, is out on Trouble in Mind on November 11, but before all that they’ll be playing the shows listed below.

Listen to the premiere of the first single from the album, “Africa” over at Brooklyn Vegan.

Africa Avenue is the new album, named after the street the band hung-out on as children, and was written and recorded by the group themselves in early 2014 in bassist Stringer-Hye’s garage. Still taking inspiration from the psychedelic era, Africa Avenue finds the band expanding their musical palette, incorporating elements of avant-pop, “cosmic country”, acid folk, and krautrock into the mix, making this album their most focused and original set of tunes to date.

Twenty-four year old Dutch multi-instrumentalist, Jacco Gardner, returns to the U.S. this fall in further support of debut album, Cabinet of Curiosities, released earlier this year via Trouble In Mind.

Recorded in his hometown of Zwaag in the Netherlands and performed almost entirely by Jacco (save the drums), Cabinet of Curiosities is a sophisticated and inviting debut. It’s an album full of playful baroque arrangements featuring minor chords and plush harmonies brushing up against strings, mellotrons, harpsichords and an occasional squeezebox, painting a warm melodic palette. Though remindful of The Zombies and Syd Barrett, Jacco brings his material to its own singular place as he deftly explores the idea of reconciling one’s loss of innocence and discovering the world may not be as wondrous as once believed, but in a far more accomplished and mature way than one would expect from an individual so young.
