The One With Brian’s Birthday

On this episode: Luke starts the episode by singing Happy Birthday to Brian and giving him four awesome songs as presents, our dear cousins talk about the upcoming Edgar Wright film Baby Driver and play a song from the soundtrack, Luke reveals his love of Gnarls Barkley, while Brian reveals his love of pudding, one of the songs has the LaBenne boys doing some super lame dance moves in their chairs, they dive deep into conversation about identiy and making your way through adult life as Brian reveals he is enjoying his 30s much more than his 20s, Luke explains the Bader-Meinhoff Phenomenon and they both workshop their new sign off phrases, all while playing eight of the best songs you’ll hear all week!

Every week Ghettoblaster feature writers (and dear cousins!) Brian LaBenne and Luke LaBenne bring you fresh new songs with the hopes of introducing you to some that you may consider to be the best song ever.  Both Brian and Luke have no idea what songs the other has picked, so what you are hearing is their genuine reaction to listening to the songs together.  Also, if you enjoy this episode, head to ITunes to subscribe and rate our podcast with the highest rating available to you.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart shares title track from new Hell EP.

“A couple months ago I posted a demo for the song “Hell” and some people said, “why don’t you record that for real?” So we went over to my friend Danny’s studio (House Under Magic) and recorded the track along with two cover songs – “Ballad of the Band” by Felt and “Laid” by James as a way to mark our forthcoming tour of Japan. The latter has lead vocals by Jen Goma, who sang on our last album and also performs with the excellent pop contortionists, A Sunny Day in Glasgow. The Felt song is really the UR-Felt song, the wry articulation of what Felt is most famous for – not being an eighth as famous as they ought to be. The song “Hell” is about how insufferable performances of sensitivity are when there’s a good song playing and someone you want to dance with.” -Kip

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are ready to release their third LP titled Days of Abandon.  The album is due on April 22 via Yebo Music.  The album was recorded at new Greenpoint studio House Under Magic, which is owned by longtime Pains cohort Danny Taylor (ZaZa.) Produced by Andy Savours (My Bloody Valentine, Patrick Wolf, Cloud Boat) and mixed by Charlie Hugall at  London’s Engine Room (Swim Deep, Florence And the Machine), Abandon departs from the exaggerated roar and clamor that defined the group’s last record, the Flood-and-Alan Moulder helmed Belong.

The band has announced a full national tour inviting out English band Fear Of Men, as well as Ablebody, to support the album.  The band is also offering a special album pre-order with a purchase of a ticket through Soundrink.com
