Best Albums (in alpahbetical order):
Blackalicious – Imani Vol. 1
They’re back. Rejoice.

Circus Devils – Stomping Grounds
Circus Devils aren’t for everyone. So what?

Czarface – Every Hero Needs a Villian
Superheroes, beats and spitting.

Andy Gabbard – Fluff
Guitar, brah. Guitar.

Colleen Green – I Want to Grow Up
The soundtrack to being 30-something.

Mac McCaughan – Non-Believers
Portastatic, Superchunk, Go Back Snowball – whatever the name, I’m in if Mac’s in.

Motel Beds – Mind Glitter
Full disclosure: I work for them. Doesn’t change a thing.

High on Fire – Luminiferous
The time is nigh. Enter in.

Liturgy – The Ark Work
Amazing explorations in black metal.

Chelsea Wolfe – Abyss
Devastatingly heavy while simultaneously beautiful.

Best Reissue: Leatherface – Razorblades and Asprin
These albums have all been out-of-print and prohibitively over-priced for too long.

Best Comic: Descender
Getting impatient waiting for the next issue of Saga? Descender is more then a stop-gap as Lemire remains one of the best writers working today.

Best Game: Mysterium
Like Clue for adults. If marketed correctly, this could reach Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne levels of popularity.

Best Show: Difficult People
Billy Eichner’s characters can seem so larger then life, it’s fun to see a more toned down version here. The casting is amazing and so is the writing. Hardly a misstep.

Best Podcast: We Watch Wrestling
Matt, Vince and Tom are equal parts ambassadors and sherpas into the world of professional wrestling. They’re really funny too. Sometimes the guys go pretty deep down the rabbit hole of explaining their last trip to PWG, but it’s understandable – seeing PWG live sounds incredible.

Chelsea Wolfe has shared their newest single, “Carrion Flowers,” and announced a major North American headlining tour for this summer/fall.

Chelsea Wolfe has returned with her fourth full length album, Abyss, out August 7 on Sargent House, and fans can hear the first single “Iron Moon” now. Originally premiered via Rolling Stone, they call it a, “haunting, doomy exercise in loud-quiet-loud dynamics” and her “darkest, heaviest and most personal album yet.”

The singer-songwriter will perform live at Desert Daze this Saturday, May 2 in Mecca, CA, with more tour dates to be announced at a later date, and fans can get an inside look at the recording process behind the album in this beautiful black & white short teaser film. The album artwork for Abyss was painted by renowned artist Henrik Uldalen.

Sleep paralysis plagues singer/songwriter Chelsea Wolfe, and that strange intersection of the conscious and the unconscious has inadvertently manifested itself within her work. Across the span of her first four albums, there is an underlying tension, a distorted and nebulous territory where dark shadows hover along the edges of the sublime and the graceful. But until now, Wolfe’s trials and tribulations with the boundaries between dreams and reality have only been a subconscious influence on her work. With her fifth album, Abyss, she deliberately confronts those boundaries and crafts a score to that realm she describes as the “hazy afterlife . . . an inverted thunderstorm . . . the dark backward . . . the abyss of time.”

Chelsea Wolfe’s material has always felt intensely private, from the almost voyeuristic bedroom- production aesthetic of her debut album The Grime and the Glow to the stark themes and atmospheres of 2013’s Pain Is Beauty. “Abyss is meant to have the feeling of when you’re dreaming, and you briefly wake up, but then fall back asleep into the same dream, diving quickly into your own subconscious,” says Wolfe.

To conjure this in-between world, Wolfe continued her ongoing collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and co-writer Ben Chisholm and drummer Dylan Fujioka, with Ezra Buchla brought on board to play viola and Mike Sullivan (Russian Circles) enlisted to contribute guitar. The ensemble traveled to Dallas, TX to record with producer John Congleton (Swans, St. Vincent). In the back of her mind burned the words of designer Yohji Yamamoto: “Perfection is ugly. Somewhere in the things humans make, I want to see scars, failure, disorder, distortion.” The resulting eleven songs reflect that philosophy as they smolder with human frailty, intimacy, quiet passion, anxiety, and deep longing.

Chicago trio Russian Circles premiered the title track from their forthcoming fifth album, Memorial today via Rolling Stone. The song features guest vocals by label (and tour) mate Chelsea Wolfe. Listen to “Memorial” HERE.

Russian Circles previously debuted the first track from the album via Pitchfork. Listen to the song “Deficit” HERE. (Soundcloud link HERE.) Check out cover art and track listing below.

Russian Circles hit the road in the EU and UK with Chelsea Wolfe in October. Both bands will play full headlining sets. Russian Circles will tour the US in early 2014. Please see complete dates below.

Memorial will be available on LP, CD and download via Sargent House on October 29th, 2013.
