The One With Dancing on the Walls

On this episode: our dear cousins broadcast live from a pirate radio ship as Brian brings news that they’ve been cancelled by Ghettoblaster editor Dave Obenour, Luke tells some cheesy music jokes, Brian takes us back to 2013 when pop and indie-rock merged and Luke urges artists not to hang out with Taylor Swift, Brian shows us what the lovechild of Jesus and Mary Chain and New Order would sound like, listeners are reminded of Luke’s fervent Don’t Read campaign and talk about the incredible TV show The Handmaid’s Tale, Brian brings his dancing shoes and dances on the wall like Fred Astaire,  they talk a lot about death and ghosts and morbidly romantic music, Brian hypes the new season of The Bachelorette out May 22nd on ABC, Luke schools Brian on who Rachel ended up with in the Friends series finale and they play eight of the best songs you’ll hear all week!

Every week Ghettoblaster feature writers (and dear cousins!) Brian LaBenne and Luke LaBenne bring you fresh new songs with the hopes of introducing you to some that you may consider to be the best song ever.  Both Brian and Luke have no idea what songs the other has picked, so what you are hearing is their genuine reaction to listening to the songs together.  Also, if you enjoy this episode, head to ITunes to subscribe and rate our podcast with the highest rating available to you.

Brooklyn’s Big Thief shares “Shark Smile”, the new song off the band’s album Capacity which drops 6/9/17 on Saddle Creek Records. Singer/songwriter Adrianne Lenker said about the song: “‘Shark Smile’ is the story of a car accident in which one dies and one lives. She recalls her lover leading up to a moment of the wreck, wishing she’d been taken into the next realm too.”

Today Big Thief announce Capacity, their highly anticipated second album, will be drop June 9 on Saddle Creek. The band also just shared the video for the first single, “Mythological Beauty.”

“There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” reveals singer and guitarist Adrianne Lenker. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a first reaction  from inside the pain, and Capacity continues that examination with a wider perspective.”

Big Thief announced their first coast-to-coast tour along with a video for the song, “Masterpiece,” which premiered on Deli Magazine on October 22, and a free stream. Listen to “Masterpiece” HERE.

Big Thief have quickly become familiar to Brooklyn and New York City audiences, and they have started reaching crowds around the region, including a recent appearance at World Café. This tour, supporting Here We Go Magic on their Be Small album release tour, will bring them to national attention. Before preparing for the tour, Big Thief spent the past few months recording and mixing with producer Andrew Sarlo and engineer James Krivchenia. The recording took place in a bucolic setting, a house on a lake in upstate New York. The isolation focused the energy and the work, resulting in 17 tracks with emotional and musical depth.
