Skylar Gudasz has announced a new album titled Cinema to be released April 17 on Suah Sounds and released its first single “Actress”. The acclaimed North Carolina songwriter will tour this month and throughout the spring, including key plays in Los Angeles, New York City, and SXSW. Dates are detailed below, more to be announced.
Deemed “the Joni Mitchell the South never had”, Gudasz recorded Cinema between the famed April Base in Eau Claire, WI, with Grammy-nominated producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, The National, The War on Drugs, Waxahatchee), and in secret studios across the lush forests of the rich NC music scene with Jeff Crawford (Daughter of Swords), Ari Picker (Dante High, Lost in the Trees) and Missy Thangs (the Love Language). Skylar’s voice is one that immediately captivates, and here on Cinema, she’s as hypnotic as ever. But beneath this arresting prettiness, she’s sharpened the edge of her lyrical genius with gritty vitality and serrated sardonicism, delivering lines like “I’m as nice as a guillotine … I’m as nice as gasoline” with eerily gentle demeanor.
Gudasz offered insight into Cinema‘s first single: “I wrote this song while living in LA, where I couldn’t stop imagining the secret lives and ambitions of every person I encountered. I have worked a lot in the service industry myself and was reckoning with the need for a day job that most performance professions require, and also how a day job is a performance in itself. I wanted to write the song that the bartender puts on after the last patron leaves, when your customer service mask goes away and who you are behind the facade of your job can come out.”
