Chastity Belt Share “Laugh”

Seattle act Chastity Belt is set to release its new album, Live Laugh Love (Suicide Squeeze Records) on March 29, 2024. Today, the noise-pop act has also shared the record’s final single, “Laugh,” which taps into a blunt, yet breezy side of the band’s sound. It came to life while singer Julia Shapiro was living in a punk house in Washington, right as Covid lockdowns were lifting. Community helped her break out of a tough headspace, and the song celebrates a summer full of friendship that felt too good to be true even as it was happening. “When I lose myself again / With the little thoughts in my head / Remember that summer we spent living instead / I wanted it to last, but it’s all in my head,” she sings on the chorus, before the song bursts into a cathartic, dreamy outro. “Laugh” emphasizes Chastity Belt’s ability to underline cheekiness with personable sincerity.

On the track, member Julia Shapiro offers: “I wrote this song during the summer of 2021 when I was still technically living in LA, but I spent the whole summer in Seattle living at a punk house (Spruce) with my friends. It was a really special summer, and I could feel that while it was happening. I’d been feeling pretty lonely in LA, and it had been a long year and a half of Covid, so it felt like this much-needed time to be around old friends. The song is about that time, and being nostalgic for it while it was still happening, which is something I tend to do.”
