Detroit-based Jet Rodriguez (real name Cameron Navetta) wrote his first song at the ripe age of eight.  At the age of eighteen, Navetta recorded his first album to critical and internet praise from all over the world.  The songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist will be releasing his latest album Self Preservation on March 31st.

Ghettoblaster is proud to premiere the video for the song “Self Preservation” today.  Here is what Navetta said about the track:

“”Self Preservation” is about the innate response to recoil and protect oneself when faced with a difficult situation. I was in a place where I had to choose between sacrificing my well-being and continuing on with the way things were, or leaving in a desperate attempt to save myself. I remember writing the song in the heat of the moment, at the exact time when I needed a real, tangible breakthrough in my life. I was essentially on the verge of a breakdown. I was so torn. I was just searching for a way out, and the process of writing the song helped me come to a place of realization. As much as it was painful, I knew I had to preserve myself at the end of the day.”

Here is what Navetta about the filming of the video:

“The video was shot on a very cold day. We had a wall outside an old venue, some chalk, and a few willing bodies, but not much else. We started to experiment with our resources, and one thing led to the next, and we arrived at the idea to have our friends write the lyrics on the wall as I was singing them. It seemed simple enough so we decided to try to capture it all in one go. It ended up taking a few attempts, but in the end we were left with the “continuous shot” vibe that can be seen in the video. I was really excited when I saw the final cut for the first time.”
