Album Premiere: Reed Turchi, Speaking in Shadows

As a songwriter, Reed Turchi confidently mines the classic blues/rock vein in “Offamymind” (“Well I can barely walk, so I guess I oughta / Get behind this wheel and drive”), effortlessly shifts gears to the satirical “Everybody’s Waiting (for the end to come),” and turns introspective in “Looking Up Past Midnight.”  Reuniting with engineer Adam Hill (Big Star, Dirty Streets, White Stripes) and recording direct to tape at Ardent Studio, Turchi heads into new territory with co-production by Billy Bennett (MGMT, Drive-By Truckers, Los Colognes). Mastered by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Natural Child, The Whigs) at Bombshelter Studios in East Nashville, with artwork and design from Charles Ritchie.
Turchi had this to say about the album:
“Writing Speaking in Shadows spanned a transitional time, in terms of musical influences and life situations. While some songs like ‘Looking Up Past Midnight’ are stylistically and lyrically similar to songs on my last album with the TURCHI trio, ‘Pass Me Over’ opens whole new avenues with duet-singing and more soulful songwriting. ‘Drawn and Quartered’ and ‘A Course To Stay’ experiment with totally new instrumentations and soundscapes, and ‘View from Angels Landing’ showcases a shimmering, simple acoustic style I hadn’t recorded before. While some albums are defined by capturing a specific mood or setting or moment, for me this album is about incorporating new ideas, inviting in many of my favorite musicians to partake, and exploring what comes next.”
