Formerly the Dayton Music Festival, the festival was rebranded this year and branched out to the visual arts under new leadership by Great Guys Entertainment. For the first time, they’re  partnering with FilmDayton and K12 Gallery & TEJAS to bring a curated selection of film viewings and a variety of art installations to the festival, raising the sensory experience up to 11.
Organizers from the Dayton Music Art and Film Festival have also sent out a call to artists on Facebook to submit work in any medium for consideration as part of DMAFF’s art exhibition at K12 Gallery and TEJAS, over the festival weekend September 19-20. Submissions are due by July 31; news of acceptance will be received by August 7. A call to volunteers was also sent out via Facebook.
This year, DMAFF is partnering with the nonprofit K12 Gallery & TEJAS at 341 S. Jefferson St. to bring four dynamic, interactive shows to festival attendees beginning Sept. 11.
On the lower level of the gallery, two main installations will take over the space:

  • “Gem City” What does it mean to you? seeks to provide its audience with a chance to reimagine abandoned Dayton spaces and contemplate the meaning and significance of our own Gem City.
  • Keep It Local: A Variety of Creations by Dayton Area Artists will feature mixed media creations from local artists.
  • The gallery’s upper level will serve as the theater and screening area for the film component of the festival, and play host to two exhibits:
  • Poster-Tastic! In its fourth year running, this exhibit is described on the festival’s website as “a historic installation” consisting of displayed “gig poster” art that promoted rock shows and events in the Dayton area. Reminiscent of the Flatstock installation at SXSW, these posters serve as more than advertisements; together they become a unique family photo album that documents some of the biggest, best, and most memorable shows in the community. The installation consists of loaned pieces by local artists, musicians and collectors.
  • Gem City Rocktography will feature snapshots of some of the most memorable events and artists of the Dayton music community, immortalized on film by local rock photographers. This year, the film choices will be curated ahead of time, and no film submissions will be accepted, though there are plans to tentatively become a juried film festival in the future, according to festival organizers.
  • Submission deadlines for these installations is July 31. Those interested in submitting pieces or offering suggestions for future festivals can contact organizers at dmaff.com.
