Album Review: Southeast Engine – Canary

Artist: Southeast Engine
Album: Canary

Rating: 4 out of 5
For their fifth album, Athens Ohio indie folk band Southeast Engine create a story of toil and heartache set to music that’s sure to please anyone already familiar with them, or any fan of this style. Lyrically, each song tackles issues of survival through trials, while centered on the story of a family struggling through the Depression. It’s a theme that people can relate to nowadays as well, which is nice to hear. Frontman Adam Remnant’s voice really brings each song the balance of desperation and hope, set to music that walks that same balance like a thin tightrope. Songs can range from slow and sad to upbeat and… still sad. But even when times seem at their worst, the music is still at its best. (Misra)
